ISI involved in "honor-killing" incidents

By Nasira Perveen

Last time I couldn’t tell the story of Shila completely for the obvious reason! The girl was killed in the name of "honor" in Hunza (see blog: I escaped death but she was killed). However, it’s not the only story of its kind in the traditionally peaceful valley of Pakistan.

Brutal murder of women in the name of "honor" is going on under the supervision of secret agencies and community leaders in the region. Talibanization of our society is underway in the comparatively educated and tolerant region. This is a big tragedy.

Assistant Professor Manzoor Ali of the Karakoram International University (KIU) Gilgit was one of the criminals involved in the killing of Shila. Besides being a teacher at the physics department, he is also president of the Ismaili Regional Council Gilgit. Thus he uses his influence at both places (but he claims that his influence is being used at both places!!).

Manzoor Ali, commonly known as Prof. Manzoor, had phoned the father of Shila and asked him to save the “honor" of Shia Ismaili Muslims by killing his daughter, who had talked to a man belonging to the Shia Ithnā‘ashry Muslim community—thus compelling the poor man to take the hardest decision of his life!

Prof. Manzoor also used this trick in my case. When I was still at the university hostel, during a day-long meeting at the KIU – besides Vice-Chancellor Dr Najma Najam, Registrar Dr Ahsanullah Mir, Additional Registrar Muhammad Hussain, Prof Salma Durrani, Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Ramzan, Director Campus Administration Karim Khan and hostel warden Tahira, Colonel Amin of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Colonel Khushamdin of the Military Intelligence (MI) were reportedly also present on the occasion – Prof. Manzoor abused my brother on the phone to make him emotional so that I get killed for "honor".

“Your traditional trick will not work this time," my brother had told him in his professional cool, calm and composed way. "You along with other criminals of the gang would face the long arm of the law soon!”

Some days later, Prof. Manzoor had told a respected community leader: "I was under pressure from the secret agencies, their favorite Vice-Chancellor and Registrar. The planners in Islamabad wanted to use the community so that no-one blames them for the crime."

Anyhow, in my case, they failed to kill me in the name of “honor” instantly, but what has happened recently in Gilgit city and Shinaki area of Hunza is really heart-wrenching!

  1. On a general point, I must say, and repeat this often, that I find it utterly offensive for people who advocate butchering their own families and murdering their girl children, to even utter the word "honour". They are without honour, without compassion, without human decency of any kind. They should be called monstrous killings. Barbaric killings. Cruel killings. Satanic killings. To sully the word honour as they do should see their mouths fill with scorpions. I realise from the above that great pressure is brought to bear, in this case on the father, but although I don't claim to be a brave man, I would like to believe I would give my own life for my daughter before I would kill or allow someone else to kill her. We recently had a case in Britain - and it sickens me to see this evil practice spreading to our shores - where a father and a brother not only strangled a girl for falling in love with someone they disapproved of, but raped her repeatedly first and then cut her into pieces and stuffed her corpse into a suitcase. Where I come from, such people are called sick maniacs and they are either locked in prison or sent to a psychiatric hospital for life. After carrying out such vile and cowardly acts against the weak and defenceless and then to have such little shame they could go to mosque and pray to God, they should be struck by lightning and sent to hell to burn for eternity. And some day, God willing, they will.

  2. Very sad and horrified with your story, Nasira. The fact that Prof. Manzoor is a physics prof. with extreme ideology signifies the irrelevance of education on a person's character.

You must be very brave live your life and write this article so that people like us will learn from your experience. Wish all the best for your life and god bless you for your contribution to society.

  3. Honour killings are done by those who are practicing against Islam. It is the work of backward illeterate and narrow minded behaviour. It is no better then the ancient custom among Hindus which burnt wives or the custom of Christians putting chastity belts on their women. Islamic scholars and teachers have a moral duty to stamp this insult to Islam out once and for all.

  4. I agree and find it horrific that people use the word honour and Islam together. When Islam was founded it brought and end to Arab infanticide of females and placed them as equals among men. To use the same religion to justify these actions is wrong and has nothing to do with tolerance and Islam. Religion is being once again for inquisitions

  5. Again! Honour killings are not honourable and they stem not from religion but practices that discriminate against women because of male superiority. Honour killings are one of the most backward and barbaric things practised in the name of Islam and only makes it an insult to Islam and what it stands for. Honour killings are an act of cowardice by men folk who do not have large shoulders to respect a persons decision to be independent and make up their own minds. Honour killings can only be eradicated through learning and wisdom and religious teachers and mullahs are called upon by God to practice tolerance and spread the word of tolerance among illustrate Muslims to stamp this practice out. It has not place in the modern world and is just as disgusting as Shati was with the Hindus and chastity belts on pregnant women by Christians during the medieval times.

  7. Terrorist are the New Nazi's wanting world domination in the name of God. Which with what they do is not of God or by God. They use religion as an excuse to destroy and kill. Every country in the world should concern itself and start a jihad to destroy terrorism, because it is affecting the fiber of world society and the peace there in. There is no Honor in having someone kill a family member for the sake of honor. Terrorism in any form is an abomination to the human race, and to the belief of God.

  10. @Anon 5:56 You're speaking the language of the ISI, and it's not new to the Pakistanis, you fool! We also know how the ISI and MI are trying to make Gilgit-Baltistan, especially Hunza a terrorized region like Waziristan! The network of Zaffar Abbas and its representative Dr Najma Najam are said to be working hard in this regard. Anyways, thanks for the comments.

  11. ISI seems frustrated cause Nasira has taken the names of 2 serving Colonels involved in heinous crimes. In the Umer Cheema case no one could even take the name of the ISI how could anyone point out any officer of the terrorizing agency. Well done daughter of Pakistan. We arr proud of you for pointing out the real enemies of our nation. We need to deal with the enemies within. May Allah keep you and your family safe to serve our country.

  13. This is absolutely, lie....This girl must admit that Prof. Manzoor is highly remarkable person for advocating girls education and providing them equal opportunity.

She should also admit that how Ismaili council platforms equally involve women in development activities....Nasira compare urself with girls of other regions and see how Ismailis are blamed for giving more opportunities to women...

The problem appears when women avoids to respect other cultural settings, liberty does not mean one should forget their cultural norms....certain there will be a social pressure when whole society is rigid and few are challenging its norms...

    This is purely baseless narration...

  14. Every one know the character of prof. Manzoor since he was teaching in Quaid Azam University in Islamabad, he used to abuse and harass girls from that time, he transferred his job in KIU Gilgit just to became council president in the region.

His hidden criminal activities are fully supported by ISI, he used to naked girls and captures their videos with the support of ISI and MI personals, the whole Gilgities knew about his such crimes ....

Within the ismaili community as a prisident of the council, he use his influences to create conflicts and split them in more groupes like Allama Nasir group, Gojali, Brushu, shenaki, yaseen groups .....

Shame on you Manzoor, did you forget your past? Your college life…..?, how shameful it was……. I am wonder how this rubbish and criminal one became professor and particularly president of ismaili regional council…..

This faithless guy should be quickly removed from ismaili council to save the cect from dividing into groupes and also should be removed from the educational institution to save the innocent females’ lives and future.

  15. I have lived in Hunza and seen the openness of the community in terms of accommodating women in the social sphere.Having said that , the disturbing trend of killing young girls for blames like having illicit relationships (mostly with boys/men of shia community) could easily be felt.
Nasira , why and how they tried to kill you? Was it because you were the sister of Mr Sulaimani or some blame was put on you?

  17. excuse me!!!!

what the crap???? prof. manzoor??? he is one of the most brilliant people in GB... for God sake.... u are creating division among people.. talking about division, it seems like, if there is any so called agency working in GB according to u, after reading ur article i must say u r perfectly giving them what they want to achieve.. and about the honor killing, please if u have any concrete evidence kindly go to the court.. instead of writing articles on blogs.... and please, dont call me an ISI agent now.... i am simply a GBian and begging u for a concrete evidence before accusing anyone.... there are alot of flaws in ur article and a person with a law degree can trash ur article... whats the proof that all those people u mentioned in VC's office were actually there...
