Mr. Sulemani’s phone, internet service cut off; life in danger

The landline phone and internet service of journalist Habib R. Sulemani – who is confined to his home for over five months after the assassination attempts – has been cut off after publication of his last blog: The art of looting people in misery.

Mr. Sulemani's life is really in danger. According to sources, one of the accused was heard saying on phone that Mr. Sulemani’s death would cost little than his writings. “Give his family a million rupee and everything would be forgotten in the name of Allah!

“If any investigation goes on—its result would be nothing! No-one cares for Benazir Bhutto (assassinated ex-prime minister and spouse of Mr. Zardari, the president of Pakistan), who cares for this isolated traitor (Mr. Sulemani).”

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) is criminally silent because Adeel Raza (one of the accused in the assassination plot of Mr. Sulemani and his family) is the nephew of PFUJ president Pervez Shaukat.

In the same way, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) is silent because one of its top officials, I.A. Rehman is also a columnist of the daily Dawn while his son is resident editor of the newspaper in Lahore.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other journalistic and human rights bodies should take notice of the situation as the government of Pakistan is still silent for unknown reasons.
