I fear no one on earth, says ISI official

Karakoram International University: Google image
TO avenge Habib R. Sulemani, the scripted drama staged on March 22, 2010 at the Karakoram International University (KIU) was actually the beginning of a series of criminal attacks on his sister, Nasira Parveen, himself and other family members.

His sister was just a soft target, but she proved stronger than steel. This shocked the 'gang of coward criminals' -- in the guise of teachers and administration officials on campus and their patrons outside -- who were very sure of the success of the 'tested' plot on which they had been working for over an year.

As we had said earlier, the KIU is the only university for the over 2 million population of Gilgit-Baltistan, a 72,000-sq/km region, which has no representation in the Pakistani federation (parliament) and is being ruled by the federal government on ad-hoc basis since 1947. And, it seems that to destroy the future of the new generation – direct or indirect attacks, harassment or negative results in examinations – is the part of an evil strategy to stop the people seeking their basic human rights in The Orphanland.

After mutual consultation, when a family member of Mr. Sulemani, started investigation into the matter in Gilgit, he was threatened and harassed at every point. He didn’t take it personally—but dealt it like a professional journalist according to the advice of Mr. Sulemani, who, from Rawalpindi/Islamabad, was in telephonic contact with everyone in Gilgit and Hunza. Here we're publishing the investigator's exclusive write-up.—The Terrorland Team

I totally ignored the tactics of psychological warfare including social isolation, accusations and horrific propaganda campaign through different social channels especially SMSes. My main target was to protect Nasira from any kind of attack as she was the prime target at that time. As the criminal gang at the KIU wanted to kill her in any way... they even killed a woman in Gilgit city during this time and the news was published in the national media to show a precedent of the would-be crime. The gang feared Nasira would expose them in a court of law.

At a time when some people were avoiding the family—as a part of the criminal plot, I searched out sources to collect bits of information. During this process, I received a number of threatening phone calls from the secret agencies to local community leaders. But I didn’t stop collecting information about the gods of our polarized region.

During my investigation, I met different people and government officials. The KIU administration was silent. When I saw officials of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) active, in surprise I asked myself: who really runs the KIU?

When I approached the KIU administration, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Najma Najam was reluctant to meet me—she kept me on waiting for hours but didn’t allow the guards to let me inside the KIU campus in Gilgit. In the meantime in Islamabad, Mr. Sulemani was pressurized to bow but he was determined to register criminal cases against the criminals on campus and the masterminds in Islamabad.

One day I was allowed to meet KIU Registrar Dr. Ahsanullah Mir. During the 33-minute conversation, he couldn’t justify their illegal action of stopping Nasira from attending classes, saying that he couldn’t do anything but the VC, who was "not available".

“I’m not allowed to speak on this matter,” he said. A simple way to escape from the long arm of the law. When I insisted on a meeting with the VC, every time, I was told: "Dr. Najma is in Islamabad.

Later on, I got her entire travel schedules from Gilgit to Islamabad and vice versa.

“Is she the VC of some university in Islamabad or the KIU in Gilgit?" I asked an official. "Whenever I ask for a meeting, I face the same tantrum!"

"Who are you to ask this," the official said.

Another whispered to dilute the bitterness: "Sir, you don't know how powerful she (VC) is—she can run the university even from her home or a foreign country!”

Such an answer is often heard from even the civil bureaucracy in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Despite bugging phone calls, text messages and emails, suspicious persons were always following me and other family members. After some days, I went to the university again, but the security guards didn’t let me inside the campus. They kept me hanging on... but when Mr. Sulemani refused to compromise and sought legal action against the accused, then VC’s personal assistant clearly told me: “The VC doesn’t want to meet you!”

After the desperate attacks on Mr. Sulemani in Rawalpindi, he is living in solitary confinement for the last 13 months and seeks action against the powerful accused as the police have refused to register cases while the Pakistani government is silent.

One day, when I met the then KIU Campus Director Karim Khan, he begged me to avoid the legal way and resolve the issue mutually. “I’m an aged man like your father. I've also five daughters. In our conservative society we avoid the laws and use traditions to solve issues amicably.”

One thing was clear. Dr. Najma Najam was running the university with the help of secret agencies like the Political Agents run the tribal areas in Pakistan: Registrar Dr. Ahsanullah Mir was acting as a Taliban commander on campus; Karim Khan was acting as leader of the Shia community while Manzoor Ali -- assistant professor, physics department and president Ismaili Regional Council Gilgit -- was acting as a tribal leader of the Ismailis. It was shocking. They university admin was not following the rules of the government but had made their own system.

Strangely, Dr. Ahsan, Karim Khan and Prof Manzoor were patronizing student wings on sectarian basis which were acting like their private militia on campus.

"I've worked with the Aga Khan Foundation," Dr. Ahsanullah Mir was always repeating. "Ismailis are peaceful people, solve this issue without wasting time in the long process of courts."

"Prof. Manzoor has made the decision in the Nasira case," Dr. Salma Durrani said one day. "You should solve this within your community," she strangely advised.

"But where are the rules," when asked, Dr. Durrani simply shunned.

Then one day a community leader revealed: "Prof. Manzoor says he is helpless in Nasira's case, as he has to follow the orders from the topotherwise the powerful Shias on campus and in his Oshkandas locality would make his life miserable."

The racist and sectarian bent of mind KIU admin had been exposed fully.

Then came a harassing call from an ISI official. I was told to meet them at a given time and point. But later they declined it as I had informed Mr. Sulemani about the rendezvous, who told me: "Meet them as an investigative reporter, not as a member of a victim family. Be ready for anything... they can do anything to you!"

As our phones were being taped (they do it even today). Then the ISI guy phoned me again. He refused in a typical way to give me his name.

"Why do you fear me," I asked.

"I fear no-one on earth," said the ISI official, and went out of my life.

Intellectual terrorism & Karakoram International University have become synonymous! The KIU Academic Staff Association has now issued a White Paper on the irregularities of the university admin. But the government is determined to destroy the only institution of higher learning in the backward region.

  1. Shias enabling Shia killings in Pakistan

    Some Shia operatives of the military state are actively involved in misrepresenting the Shia massacres as some kind of ethnic cleansing against a particular ethnicity (e.g., Hazaras of Quetta) while ignoring the fact that LeJ-SSP-TTP killers are killing Shia Muslims of all ethnic backgrounds in Pakistan and the region.

    This is all too familiar. kul yom ashura, kul arz karbala, kul opportunists kufi shia! (every day is Ashura, every land is Karbala and every opportunist is a Kufi Shia). Kufi Shias were those who assured Imam Hussain (AS) for support but instead participated in his slaughter in Karbala on the day of Ashura or looked the other way.

    There are currently four types of Shias dominant in Pakistani media and society:

    1. Sajid Naqvi types, IRI (Islamic Republic of Iran) + ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) infected mullahs who burn USA and Israel flags to protest Shia killings by KSA-ISI;

    2. Abdul Khaliq Hazara types, who mislead their own people by selling the ethnicity card to blame the Pashtun and/or Baloch instead of LeJ-SSP-TTP terrorists backed by the KSA-ISI duo;

    3. Ejaz Haider types, who are confessedly champions and advocates of the Deep State (like several urban fake liberals);

    4. The last type comprises those Kufi Shias who claim to support progressive causes or parties and may opportunistically utter an odd vague statement but either serve as apologists of the Deep State or misrepresent the Shia massacres. Some of them are known to be paid operatives hired for flattery and propaganda (e.g. some PPP office bearers) or have their financial interests aligned with pro-military establishment institutions (e.g. some members of the Aman Ki Asha project of the Jang Group).

  2. "Shias enabling Shia killings in Pakistan"

    Similarly some Sunnis and Ismailis enabling killing of their own people in Gilgit-Baltistan to get personal benefits from the ISI, MI and FCNA.
