Anti-Americanism & tribalism – President Zardari starts new game

By Habib R. Sulemani

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
TODAY US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during a joint meeting with Pakistani leadership in Islamabad, has for the first time focused on the root cause of terrorism in our unfortunate region.

President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt-Gen. Shuja Pasha, Foreign Minister Hina Khar and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir were present on the occasion.

After the meeting, Ms. Clinton addressed a news conference and said that Pakistan needs to understand that anti-Americanism and conspiracy theories will not end its problems. Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen also spoke on the occasion.

Ironically, soon after the American leadership’s news conference, the Pakistani Presidency announced that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari – son of President Zardari and chairman of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) – had been made head of the Zardari Tribe.

It’s an insult to democracy and has exposed the current face of the PPP!

Anyway, this was a typical symbolic answer (intentionally or unintentionally) to the Obama administration that the policy of “anti-Americanism and conspiracy theories” will continue at public level despite our 'friendship' at official level. This double game, with the help of the local media, has been the center of the covert strategy of the ISI regarding relations with successive American administrations.

Islam, not at all—tribalism is actually the main reason behind the suffering of the over one billion Muslims in the world, especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Tribalism negates democracy. It's an inhuman and ancient philosophy, which has made the entire world to suffer in one way or the other.

In the 1990s, the ISI used tribalism to create the Taliban in Afghanistan, and when the Taliban snatched power, they invited Osama bin Laden (OBL) to Kabul and the rest is history!

Due to tribalism, Balochistan province could not get its due rights within the confederation of Pakistan since independence. The current militancy in this unfortunate province and in the Federally-Administrated Tribal Areas (Fata) is due to the brutal forms of tribalism.

Despite the decision of the government, the military establishment is reluctant to merge Fata with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province due to its ‘hidden’ anti-Americanism strategy, which has killed hundreds of thousands of innocent citizens, and displaced many more. The Parliament is helpless and parliamentarians, due to fear of the ISI, keep silent!

After the death of OBL in an American commando action inside Pakistan this month, the Zardari-Gilani-led government has formally become a part of the almighty military establishment. And now, the announcement of Bilawal Zardari’s tribal position has formally made the once anti-establishment PPP a political wing of the Pakistan Army.

The American funds can’t reach the common people in Pakistan until the menace of tribalism comes to an end, and real democracy takes roots in our society. Instead of tribalism, the Parliament should be taken out of the influence of the Army and made an independent legislative body.

When and how the military establishment will become a professional security agency and abandon its unconstitutional behind-the-scene role in politics? This is possible by spreading awareness among the people through a free media and pressure from the global community.

It’s a dilemma that the American administration is thinking about the welfare of Pakistani people while our  civilian and military establishments only think about personal gain.

I failed to understand relation between Bilawal's nominaton as head of Zardari tribe and Clinton's visit. Her visit does not mean that everything else has to stand still...We are not yet that slaves to USA !!
The writer failed to grasp the two events separately. Hakim ali Zardari was the head of the Zardari tribe and after his death, his son Asif Ali Zardari was to take charge of the tribe but as that of PPP, A2Z preferred to pass on the crown to his son, so what's wrong in it?
