Is there really any liberation movement in Gilgit-Baltistan?

The Terrorland Report

Reporter Mazhar Tufail
THE Pakistani military establishment is disturbed by some articles recently appeared on The Terrorland group blogs, especially Cyber Age challenges & Ismaili Muslims.

It was a report based on the opinions of the terrorized people of Gilgit-Baltistan, and Hunza valley was taken as an example. It was written in good faith to change the tyrant behavior of government officials towards the locals.

After public debates on the post, afraid of the situation, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has started spreading typical conspiracy theories through its stooges in the mainstream media and its ‘influential’ circles.

Instead of addressing the real issue of the over two million people of the 72,496 sq/km Gilgit-Baltistan region, the visionless government is still using the outdated tyrant methods to hush up the second-class citizens of this mountainous area where people have no Constitutional rights since 1947.

The majority of the people want basic human right in particular the right to vote and representation in the Pakistani Parliament. The current Pakistan People’s Party-led civilian government wants to declare Gilgit-Baltistan constitutionally the Fifth Province of the country but the powerful military establishment is a big hurdle in this democratic way. The generals want status quo in the region.

Therefore, the secret agencies are trying to divide the innocent people on sectarian and racial bases and introducing a Nazism-like violent nationalism in the region through the Zaid Hamid/Ahmed Quraishi brigade. Now the MQM – political wing of the military establishment – has also joined in this unholy war to maintain status quo in Gilgit-Baltistan by terrorizing the poor and innocent people.

The Jang Group’s English publication, The News has published an ISI-fed table story on July 24, 2011, claiming that security agencies have revealed an alleged plot against Gilgit. The story has been filed by reporter Mazhar Tufail, who, according to one of his colleagues, is lowest of the lower ISI stooges in the Jang Group as Kamran Khan, Hamid Mir, Ansar Abbasi and Saleh Zafir are allegedly the top-ranking undercover agents. Here is the controversial story:

Security agencies reveal plot against Gilgit

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security officials have got hold of some important documents related to a plot of the Indian intelligence service, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), aimed at alienating people of Gilgit-Baltistan from Pakistan and separate the province comprising erstwhile Northern Areas from rest of the country, The News reliably learnt here on Friday.

According to the information, some anti-Pakistan foreign forces are running a covert campaign in Gilgit-Baltistan as part of a conspiracy to internally weaken Pakistan and separating the Northern Areas, known across the world for the natural beauty, from the country. When this correspondent sought comments of a senior official of a security institution on the highly sensitive information received by The News, he provided such information and mentioned such points and individuals that cannot be reported because of the sensitivity of their nature.

This reporter also got access to a strategy devised by RAW and another neighbouring country of Pakistan with the aim of creating tension between China and Pakistan. Interestingly, the security authorities have also caught a chart prepared for spoiling the exemplary and time-tested relations between Pakistan and China. Targeting the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly, which has a total of 34 members, was also a part of the plot, the sources revealed, requesting anonymity.

The sources disclosed some parts of the plot, as, according to them, the security apparatus of the country is still working on the matter. It, however, transpired from the information provided by the sources that the Indian lobby is proactively working to target Gilgit-Baltistan and launch a so-called liberation movement in the region. All this is being done to isolate Pakistan in the comity of nations, and the creation of misunderstanding between China and Pakistan to spoil the two countries strong friendship is part of the same policy, said the sources, adding that such forces have, however, so far failed in achieving any success in accomplishment of their spiteful agenda.*

After reading the story of Mr. Tufail, there are some basic questions asked by people of the region: who are the sources of the story? Why the “provided information” is being hidden? If the information was so “sensitive” then what is the purpose of this incomplete story? Why the authorities are hesitating to reveal the names of the accused in the so-called plot? And the most important question: Is there any “liberation movement” in Gilgit-Baltistan or this story is meant to make the patriotism of the people doubtful in rest of Pakistan?
